We have had an exciting past few days around here. It started on Monday with Matt coming home from work early. He wasn't feeling too good, and he had already "lost his lunch" at the office. He came home and went straight to bed. Around 6:30pm he threw up again and it was thick red blood. I immediately drove him to the Avista ER and dropped him off since we weren't sure how long he was going to be there and I needed to stay with the kids, and we arranged for a family member to pick him up later that night. Matt continued to throw up blood in the ER, so they pumped his stomach and removed a LOT more blood. They didn't have the GI resources at Avista so they moved him by ambulance to St. Anthony's in Denver. It was killing me to be at home, but I knew the kids needed to be taken care of, and that there wasn't going to be anything that I could do at the hospital, and that he was in good hands for the night. But I headed over first thing in the morning.
In the morning Matt got to see the GI doctor who said that he thought that Matt either had an ulcer, or a tear in his esophagus but that they wanted to do an Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (a scope of his esophagus and stomach) to make sure that was all it was and that there were not any other problems. We hung out all morning and they took him to do the EGD around noon. It was a relatively quick procedure, and they did find a tear right where the esophagus and stomach meet (its called a Mallory-Weiss tear). It was most likely caused by Matt vomiting frequently and violently. It is not a big deal, so they stitched that up and said that he would be able to go home that evening after they knew he was able to tolerate solid foods. We spent a lot more time waiting for doctors and nurses and room service before they discharged him around 4pm. We went home and he went to bed early and slept till morning.
Today he feels pretty good. I convinced him to take the day off from work to rest, and his boss even told him not to do any work from home. He's still tired from the ordeal, and he said he feels like he was punched in the gut (understandably), but all-in-all he is doing pretty good.
We can't thank our friends and family enough for the help, support and prayers that were given to us. We love you all!
